The Hiring Problem

The AWS Talent Problem

What happens when you try to hire AWS engineers the traditional way

6+
MONTHS

Average time to hire a senior AWS engineer. Your infrastructure waits.

$180K+
COST

Salary for a senior cloud architect in the US. Plus benefits.

40%
OVERSPEND

Without expertise, most teams waste 40% of their AWS budget.

There's a better way to get AWS expertise.

Why Us

Why Teams Bring In One Senior Engineer

Not a bench and not a recruitment pipeline. One engineer who works out what is actually wrong and ships the fix into your production.

One Senior Engineer

Not a bench. The person you talk to is the person writing the code. Eight years shipping production AWS across fintech (Dintero), energy (PETRONAS) and own products (CostPatrol, Boody).

Four Years Embedded

Not a theory about how embedding works. 1,441 commits across 50 services in one enterprise client's codebase since 2022, under their review standards and their pager.

US/EU Timezone Overlap

4-7 hours of real-time overlap. Your standups, your incident response, your review cycle. Contracted through an Estonian company, so EU B2B is straightforward.

Verifiable Cost Wins

Five public AWS scan reports on costpatrol.io totaling $125K/yr flagged. Plus pattern wins across multiple client engagements: Aurora consolidation, NAT Gateway re-routing, CloudWatch log retention.

Choose Your Engagement Model

Embedded Engineer

One senior engineer inside your repositories, your review standards and your on-call rotation. The model I have run continuously since 2022 with an enterprise client.

From $4K/month

Audit First

Before building what was asked for, a review of whether it is the right thing. This is how most engagements here start, and it has repeatedly found the expensive problem nobody had flagged.

Scoped Build

End-to-end delivery of a defined system, fixed price and clear milestones. Built and handed over, not prototyped.

What you are hiring

Two roles, one person.

The industry is collapsing a dozen job titles into a handful. Two of them describe the work I actually do, and there is evidence for both halves rather than a preference for one.

FORWARD DEPLOYED

Business analyst, delivery lead and architect are merging into one role: the engineer who goes into the customer's environment, works out what is actually broken, and ships the fix there rather than writing it up.

I have done exactly that continuously since 2022: 1,441 commits across 50 services, on 525 days with commits, inside a multi-tenant codebase built by a team of more than a hundred developers that I did not write. Their standups, their review standards, their pager. I ended up setting the pull request review standard for that team.

80+ venues, billions of events a year. Client not named by preference.

PRODUCT ENGINEER

Product manager, designer, QA and engineer are merging the other way: one person who owns a product end to end and decides what gets built, not only how.

4 products built solo. On CostPatrol I chose the detection rules, 127 of them across 38+ AWS services, set the pricing tiers, and wrote the engine. Boody went from concept to live users in three days and now carries 583 tests across 51 files. Nobody handed me a spec on any of them, so I wrote 38 of them before the code.

Two are publicly reachable and you can open them: costpatrol.io and boody.ai.

Why the overlap is the useful part

Most forward deployed engineers have never shipped a product of their own, so they are excellent at delivering a decision somebody else made. Most product engineers have never been embedded in another company's production for four years and carried the pager for it, so they have never had to earn the right to change someone else's system.

The practical effect is that a decision does not have to travel through a product manager, a designer and a delivery lead before it reaches someone who can implement it. The person working out what is wrong is the person shipping the fix. On the Ravina engagement that meant finding a conversion event firing from 35 different URLs and product copy describing units the building does not have. Neither was in the brief. Both would have been paid for in wasted ad spend.

The honest limit: this does not scale by adding people. If you need six engineers in parallel next month, this is the wrong shop and I will say so on the call. It is built for the first engineer on a hard problem, or one senior pair of hands inside a team that already exists.

What I work with

Production, not familiarity.

Everything below has run in production on a system somebody depended on, which is a narrower list than the one I could put on a CV. Where something is research rather than production experience, it is not on here.

AWS and distributed systems

Lambda, Step Functions, EventBridge, DynamoDB single-table, SQS and SNS with dead-letter queues, API Gateway, AppSync, Cognito, S3, CloudFront, Aurora, ECS and Fargate, CDK, CloudFormation, cross-account STS. Transactional outbox for exactly-once delivery, idempotency, circuit breakers and backpressure.

Languages and frameworks

TypeScript as the primary language, Node.js, Python, React and Next.js, Fastify, Express, GraphQL through Apollo and AppSync, REST and WebSockets. The four products above are TypeScript end to end.

Data and search

PostgreSQL and Aurora PostgreSQL including zero-downtime engine upgrades run across staging, UAT and production. DynamoDB, MySQL, Redis, Typesense and OpenSearch. Sub-50ms catalogue search across a six-figure number of live records.

Reliability and observability

New Relic with alerts and dashboards as code, CloudWatch, Sentry, PagerDuty, Grafana. Out-of-hours on-call and live incident response on a revenue-critical platform, which is a different skill from building the dashboard.

Infrastructure as code and CI/CD

Terraform, Pulumi, Docker, GitHub Actions, Serverless Framework, Wrangler. Deploy pipelines cut from 45 minutes to under 5 across 40+ brands and four AWS regions.

Edge and AI

Cloudflare Workers and KV in production fronting a multi-venue e-commerce platform. Claude API through the Anthropic SDK and Bedrock, OpenAI SDK, RAG and vector search, agents, and eval harnesses for grading the output rather than assuming it.
